This production has also been nominated for four 2025 Olivier Awards, including Best Director and Best Revival of a Play, cementing it as one of the most celebrated theatrical events of the year.
Strong, last seen on Broadway in the Tony Award®-winning A View From the Bridge (for which he earned a Tony nomination), returns in a career-defining performance. Manville, an Academy Award® nominee, makes her highly anticipated Broadway debut. Hailed as a "tightly sprung, gasp-inducing, modern-day political tale of truth and lies" (The Guardian), Icke's visionary revival was nothing short of a sensation. After opening at London's Wyndham's Theatre on October 4, 2024, Oedipus became an instant phenomenon, concluding its record-breaking run on January 4, 2025. Across 13 electrifying weeks, it became the highest-grossing limited-run production in Wyndham's history, with its final week setting a new box office record for the storied venue.
"Electric" (Observer) and urgent, it didn't just bring Greek tragedy back to the West End—it redefined it. Named the Observer's No. 1 Best of Culture 2024, this Oedipus played like a political thriller, gripping audiences in breathless suspense until its final, devastating moment.
It's election night. The polls predict a landslide victory. Everything is about to change.
After his revelatory Oresteia, Icke (1984, The Doctor) transforms Sophocles' epic tragedy into an essential, explosive, sensual human thriller catapulting the secrets of the past into a high-stakes present. Led by Olivier Award winners and current 2025 nominees Mark Strong and Lesley Manville, this production "set the stage on fire" (The Guardian). Manville's 'Jocasta' is "magnetic and magnificent" (iNews), while Strong delivers a "fearless, sometimes fearsome" (Independent) performance, brimming with raw intensity and tragic inevitability. Their chemistry is "dazzling" (Sunday Times), their presence "transfixing" (Financial Times), and together, they drive the drama toward its shattering conclusion.
Robert Icke's Oedipus was originally produced in Dutch by Internationaal Theater Amsterdam and was presented at the Edinburgh International Festival.
This fall, Broadway audiences will experience what London critics and theatergoers already know: Oedipus isn't just a revival. It's a revelation.
